National Hockey League

Articles focused on the games, players, and teams around the NHL.

With the pre-playoff break, I wanted to delve down and try to see exactly what we have here. I'm going to look both at this year's stats alone and the past 2yrs stats together to try and get a clear picture of what our players actually are. These are all the stats that I've learned to depend on as the most useful and accurate ones to assess hockey performance. This is my best assessment of the roster we have - and I'd love to hear your guys' own assessments as well. Feel free to add your...
Hey everybody -- inspired by that ESPN article from a few days ago, I decided I'd make my own rankings. Hope you enjoy. Poile - NSH (The master of re-signings. Jarnkrok, Forsberg, Arvidsson, Ekholm, Turris are all signed to incredible deals. The guy can build a helluva team and has the guts to trade.) Yzerman - TB (There's a reason that Team Canada always hires Stevie Y. Those Hedman, Kucherov, Stamkos, Vasilevskiy, and Stralman deals are insane and he's amazing at getting depth players...
Due to the nature and speed in which the NHL is evolving this contract is about a lot more than just William Nylander and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The last several years the league has seen an incredible influx of young talent that have proven to be impact players much sooner than previous decades. This season might see more players in the first 5 years of their pro career in the top 60 of scoring than ever before. Traditionally players coming off an ELC are usually signed to reasonable mid...
Who doesn't love chaos? I sure do, and it seems like for a long time, the NHL did too. It wasn't uncommon to see players finishing their careers in the 80s/90s/00s with 1000+ PIMS, but most of those guys never had much of a scoring touch, they were goons. Their job was to take penalties for the sake of physically intimidating the other team or just to cause pure chaos on the ice and hope that it benefited your team in the end. But there have been a few players in the history of the NHL...
And by official, I mean mine, of course. So after all the fighting on the other threads, i tried to crank out a stats-based Center ranking, but nothing too fancy. At the same time it's both complicated and simple. NOTE: IF YOU HATE STATS JUST SKIP TO THE BOTTOM FOR THE FINAL RANKINGS Here's how I approached it. I looked at the last 2 seasons. This imo is the best combo of "recent" and "good sample size" to judge a player's current value. But it's not perfect, of course, especially when it...
I mentioned this the day of the trade, but with the Karlsson transaction having included Chris Tierney and Rudolfs Balcers ( ), the trade extended the life of a chain of deals that can be traced unbroken back all the way to the 1993 draft and the Sharks' first round pick that year. So in honor of that, I have spent the last few days creating what might be my magnum opus: a complete visual reference to the greatest trade tree in Sharks history and possibly one of the greatest in NHL...
The TDL is approaching, and all the trade discussion seems to revolve around mortgaging a team's future for rentals. Myself, I don't agree one bit with this approach; it is evident that buying at TDL is a prime example of the practice of buying high, and often times you won't get much bang for your buck. Below is a list of all the 'expensive' trade deadline rentals from 2015 to this date (this cutoff is based on my own knowledge of these trades; I don't want to review deals which I don't...
This was inspired by a thread on another forum and the research done by another poster, but I think it merits some discussion. It doesn’t make sense that in the 11 years since Lowe was “fired” from the Oilers, three GM's have come through the door and almost all the moves look and feel indistinguishable from the GM before them. Some Bruins fans rip on Chai, but at a time he was an undisputed brilliant executive. But becoming....this? It doesn't make sense. After doing some research into...
There are a lot of potential Big Stories of teams winning the draft Lottery. With almost every team, there is a big story here. Which would be the biggest?
Is Tampa Bay the best roster in the Cap era and possibly beyond that? I believe they definitely have a case for it. Breaking down the team: Kucherov: a top 3 winger in the league, no one will argue that. He's consistent and has tons of talent. 90-100 points Stamkos: a top sniper, elite talent, has regained form after a hard run of injuries, and is a 80-90 point guy. Point: an absolute steal for the lightning. Point keeps proving his value over and over and has proven many people wrong....
We are at the quarter mark of the season and it seems like the highest scoring season in a long time. We have 50 players producing at PPG pace or better! So let's take a look at the top 20 scorers (since I didn't feel like doing the top 50) and compare their up-to-date production against their career production and see which players are likely going to sustain their pace, improve it or see it degrade over the course of the season. I have used ioSH% (on-ice shooting percentage) as the...
Each year I keep a list of each team's offseason (since the trade deadline) acquisitions and subtractions. I've tried to summarize them here, as some people might find it useful or interesting. The formatting kind of sucks right now, and hopefully I'll figure out a new way to present it that will be easy to set up. Legend Free Agency Trade Draft Waivers Buyout/Termination/Retired Unsigned Draft Pick Non-Qualified RFA ANA - Reto Berra (G) - Kevin Bieksa (D) - Jared Boll (F) - J.T....
Kopitar playing in his 12 season (leading scorer in 10) for LA Kings is having his best season yet. He currently has 80 points (29 G 51 A) and has 29 point lead on the second LA kings scorer Drew Doughty (51 P). His most common linemates are Dustin Brown (48 P, third leading scorer) and Alex Iafallo (25 P, undrafted rookie). Their last season leading scorer(Jeff Carter) got injured in the start of this season in which he played only 16 games. Their second line center was most commonly Adrian...
There's been a lot of talk this offseason about tax. Certain teams have an unfair advantage due to having lower taxes than other who have high taxes. Tampa Bay tends to be the main team people are complaining about, although others like Dallas, Nashville get lumped in as well. So I wanted to really explore this idea. Do teams with low tax rates have more success? And do teams with high tax rates have less? The hypothesis people seem to be making is that teams with low tax have an unfair...
I've long wondered why the NHL doesn't have a unique award for the defenseman who scores the most points in a season. Benefits: Honors the best offensive defender in the league. A perfect corollary to the Selke Award, which honors the best defensive foward. Unlike the Selke, it's not a subjective award. He who gets the most points wins. There's precedent for creating new awards. The Rocket Richard was introduced in 1999. The trophy was donated by the Montreal Canadiens to the NHL. Are you...
List is made up on a combination of tangible stats (goals, assists, etc.) as well as underlying metrics (CF%, rel CF%, xGF%, etc.)
Charting how each team's draft picks performed over the last 10 years.
I hate that bad teams are rewarded with high draft picks, talented prospects who those poorly managed franchises often ruin. Athletes who spent their whole lives working their butt off to achieve their dreams to be mismanaged and have their development stunted by incompetent management. Go to the sub-forums of teams who aren't even basement dwellers but bubble teams, and you'll see a bunch of fans actively cheering against their favorite team so they get a better shot at the loser prize....
Obviously every system isn't perfect, but I like a system that encourages trading. Here are a few thoughts/ideas, some less novel and likely recycled. 1. Trading salary. There's arguments against this, but teams can already retain cap hit if trading a player, so how about the team retains the player and trades the salary/cap hit. It's essentially trading money. Teams can eat some salary, without actually needing to take the player and gain some assets along the way. 2. Deadline rentals....
Defense is more than just the level of skill in the guys playing. It is a system. Then I started thinking about other teams that have good defense but don't see the results.
Tracking the moves of the NHL's most active GM.
I would like to share with you team rankings based on the ELO rating system. This is purely mathematical based on wins and losses. Each team has a score. That score increases or decreases based on wins and losses. The amount of change is based on the score of the opponent.
Shortly after Thanksgiving of last year, the Florida Panthers relieved head coach Gerard Gallant, and their then, highly unqualified general manager, Tom Rowe, stepped in as interim head coach. Fast forward to today, where Gallant has taken an expansion team and as of today, is coaching the best team in the Western Conference, with the second best overall record in the NHL. Meanwhile, the Panthers are among the worst teams in the league and will be looking at a lottery selection as they...
If you're a New York Islander fan who wants to keep John Tavares, you're probably wondering if the universe is conspiring against you, these days. In November, the Islanders won seven of eight games to improve to 15-7-2. But evening during that hot streak the Isles gave up at least three goals five times. Since then, the Islanders have been awful, going 5-12-2. In those 19 games, the Islanders have given up 78 goals. They've dropped five straight games in regulation, allowing 25 goals....
Yeah, that's his real name. OUTSIDE of his contract of course, and even then there comes negative talk with that.... Going into the playoffs and such there will be no EIchel talk, so felt like making this thread to discuss the injustice that is his pro-career to this point. I had to ask who else has had a rougher ride then a star of this calibre from the beginning of his career? You could even call it BUFFALO luck. But look, I'm not one to cry because every team has a history of being...
