Sounds like a bunch of assumption and speculation. So why was Bishop sparingly used after he was acquired if he was in their long term plans?

And what veterans was Lombardi prepared to move? The only one he dealt was Dwight King. Are you just guessing and fantasizing what could have been?

I agree with @DryIslandBartender , that coffee with Bob segment was telling. It was also my last year as a season ticket holder for different reasons, however Dean had been pretty sober about things. Then right at the end of the season after Dean was fired the Luc and Blake show had a season ticket holder meeting with Bob at the Microsoft theater. Out comes Luc after Bob told a few stories and said, "Next year we are pushing for the Cup, the next one is the best one and blah, blah, blah." I knew for a fact ownership wasn't about to rebuild.

Pretty sure the term on Quick was to keep his cap down.

The coffee with Bob segment with Lombardi was recorded during the offseason of 2016, before the start of the 2016-17 season. That’s when we thought the team might make some moves in order to “adapt.”

So what happened during that season? They traded Dwight King, Tom Gilbert, and Peter Budaj and acquired Jarome Iginla and Ben Bishop. No future assets were acquired other than a conditional fourth for King.

Did Lombardi reveal his trade secrets to some of you who know exactly what he was going to do?

    You are correct.

Perhaps the disconnect between DL's words and actions were ownership?

That offseason he also tried to re-sign Lucic and placed Matt Greene on waivers with the intention of buying him out in order to create cap space to retain Milan, but thankfully Chiarelli made an outrageous offer.

This idea that a long term plan was put in place by Dean that he failed to execute because he was fired is revisionist bull****. He had all summer in 2016 to get rid of players and did no such thing.

On top of that I'm sure the business indicators were lagging. I'm not a season ticket holder, but I'm sure prices were still outrageous in 2015-2017 at least, no?

From an ownership standpoint, how can you gut the on ice product if people are still paying exorbitant prices?

I think people assume Bishop was the long term replacement plan for Quick because that’s the only context in which that acquisition makes any sense at all.

So either A. Bishop really was intended to replace Quick, or B. Dean Lombardi completely lost his mind.

I don’t bemoan anyone for taking either position, tbh.

It was done to prevent a division rival (Calgary) from acquiring a starting goalie and he wanted an insurance backup in case Quick re-injured himself, as Sutter had lost faith in Budaj.

The part about Lombardi having had a long term plan for Bishop to replace Quick is just fan speculation.

There was discussion of Lombardi planning to keep both on a 1a, 1b tandem

Yeah regarding the Kopitar contract, I think Dean was quoted as saying they weren't even in the same ballpark. Then Luc gets involved and Kopitar got his golden ticket.

    Dont worry about it
Everyone seems to want to go to town on DL. There's no denying that he crapped the bed after the '14 Stanley Cup. I wound have loved to have kept the pick that would have turned into either Barzal or Connor, and then flip Jones for another mid round 1st and maybe be able to get both of those guys. Instead he made that awful trade for Lucic.

But don't let the frustration blind us from the fact that he built 2 Stanley Cup teams. I would take 2 cups followed by 6-8 years of suck. Win some cups, rebuild, lather, rinse, repeat.

    Sounds like fan speculation.

I don’t believe for a minute Bishop was acquired to just backup Quick. DL references several times Quicks load management in previous years and basically said it was unsustainable given Quicks injuries. Quick had 6-7 years left on his contract at that point and they were either splitting the load or dumping Quick.

The cap math doesn’t work for the former and Lombardi always builds his teams from the net out. So it wouldn’t/shouldn’t be surprising that this was the first move.

That's cheap for Bottom six players. A productive one that's above league average points wise yearly will cost you 4 million a season at minimum, that's one player.

Bishop was a pure rental to supplement Budaj's fading form and Quick's injury recovery while still chasing a playoff run.

He couldn't replace Budaj's game, and the Kings would've been much better off dancing with the girl they brought.

didn't bishop like, not even get used? they made it sound like he was gonna go 50-50 with quick to stretch him for the playoffs but it still seemed like 90-10 from what i remember

I heard JFK was going to get us out of Vietnam and that's why the military-industrial complex shot him.

Why would Lombardi spend assets on a #1 goalie to replace Budaj? There were a ton of backup goalies to be had for cheaper.

Unless the answer is that Dean lost his mind, which again, is not an unfair premise.

We're supposed to be tanking, not only to get a no-worse-than top five pick, but also to get a very high second rounder in this deep draft. Our aim is to get another haul from the top three rounds that's even better than the great draft we had in 2019. We want to lose as many games as possible.
