No, Vinny IS still retired... from the NHL.

Many players play in Europe after their NHL years are over. Hasek until age 46, heck Datsyuk has 42 points in 54 games this season to date.

The thread title is irksome because it's misleading.

Uhm, no. Prospal retired from professional hockey 7 years ago and now he's playing again. Thus he is not retired anymore. The only thing that is misleading or rather misguided is the habit of conflating "not playing in the NHL anymore" with "retired".

He's a nut as a coach, I've heard. He's just yelling all the time and poppin off...when he makes his team do bag skates or suicides, he jumps in...does them...and just laps everyone...he's still in great shape haha

Prospal was always a good 1. Neat to see him come back.

How many other players have led their teams in scoring in their final NHL season?

Beliveau in 1971 is the only other one I can think of off the top of my head.

Gretzky did it. It's incredibly rare - those are all the cases I know of.

datsyuk was outscored by zetterberg by one point, and zetts played 16 more games. that was my best guess.

A bunch of guys who went on to play in the WHA did it (Eg, Bobby Hull, Frank Mahovlich) but I don't think they count.

I do believe that someone on the Flyers broadcast team at the time just could not say “vaclav” and hence he got a south philly italian style nickname that stuck.

Bobby Hull returned to the NHL after the WHA so his last season leading Chicago in scoring wasn't his last NHL season.

Mahovlich and Gerry Pinder (! - an even more obscure name than Prospal) are the only two guys I could find who led an NHL team in scoring, immediately jumped to the WHA, and never played another NHL game.

    Ceske Budejovice...

They weren't always in 3rd division weren't they? What happened there?

Mario did it during his first retirement. His 2nd retirement was was forced prematurely by a heart condition, but even if he stuck it out, its unlikely he out produces Crosby that year.

That was my first thought as well.

Exactly how good is the Czech 3rd League?

The old top-tier Ceske Budejovice team, renamed "Mountfield" in 2006, moved to Hradec Kralove in 2013. They still play in the Extraliga. Ceske Budejovice is famously the home of Budvar beer—the arena itself is called Budvar Arena—and in 2013 the Extraliga began a league-wide sponsorship deal with Pilsner Urquell subsidiary Radegast. The lease agreement at the arena didn't allow them to sell any other beer than Budvar's product, and the Extraliga deal didn't allow them to sell any other beer than Radegast's product, so the owners moved the team to Hradec Kralove instead.

A new team in the first league (the second "tier" of hockey in the Czech Republic) based in Ceske Budejovice took the spot of the old team in Hradec Kralove. In a way Ceske Budejovice and Hradec Kralove traded teams, and leagues, with C. Budejovice dropping a level.

The team Prospal coaches, "Motor Ceske Budejovice" is in the first league (again, second level below the Extraliga). The team he's played a couple games with in the last few days, in the second league (third level) is "HK David Servis Ceske Budejovice"; a totally different hockey club that just happens to be in Ceske Budejovice.
